Feminine form derived from the voiced reflex of फटिङ्ग (phaṭiṅga), फट्टिङ्ग (phaṭṭiṅga), retroflexed from फत्तिङ्ग (phattiṅga), aspirated from पत्तिङ्ग (pattiṅga), middle-vowel shifted from पत्तङ्ग (pattaṅga), a double-consonant variant of पतङ्ग (pataṅga, “flier, flying insect”), a compound of पतन (patana, “wing, act of flying down”) +‎ ग (ga​, “going”); many sound changes from the original word due to influence from a non-Aryan substrate.
