From the root वृत् (vṛt, “to turn, rotate”), with a semantic development from "turned" > "twisted (material)" > "wick (made from twisted fibres)"; compare Arabic فَتِيلَة (fatīla, “fuse, wick”) from ف ت ل (f-t-l) for a similar derivation.
