From Proto-Indo-European *wiḱ-pótnih₂ (“lady of the household”). Cognate with Old Prussian waispattin (“mistress of the house”), Albanian zonjë (“respected lady”). By surface analysis, विश् (viś, “house, dwelling”) +‎ पत्नी (patnī, “mistress”). See also विश्पति (viśpati).

     तस्यै विश्पत्न्यै हविः सिनीवाल्यै जुहोतन ॥

     yā subāhuḥ svaṅguriḥ suṣūmā bahusūvarī.
     tasyai viśpatnyai haviḥ sinīvālyai juhotana.

     To her with lovely fingers, lovely arms, to the prolific Mother of many sons—
