Etymology

Inherited from Prakrit *𑀞𑀻𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀡 (*ṭhīkkaṇa), from *𑀞𑀻𑀓𑁆𑀓 (*ṭhīkka, “firm, right”) (whence also ঠিক (ṭhik, “correct, right”) and ঠিকা (ṭhika, “contract, piecework”)) + -𑀅𑀡 (-aṇa, nominal suffix), probably extended from Sanskrit स्था (sthā, “to stand, stay”), with the meaning extended likewise to mean the place where one is firmly standing or staying. Doublet of স্থান (sthan), স্তান (stan, “place”), থানা (thana, “police station”), থাকা (thaka, “to live, stay”), স্থল (sthol, “ground, land”), থালা (thala, “plate”), স্থাপন (sthapon, “placing”), স্থাপত্য (sthapotto, “architecture”), ঠাঁই (ṭhãi, “place”) and স্থিত (sthito, “fixed, located”).
