From કોગળો (kogaḷo, “mouthful of liquid, gargle”), inherited from Prakrit 𑀓𑀯𑀮 (kavala), perhaps borrowed from Dravidian (compare Malayalam കവളം (kavaḷaṁ, “ball of boiled rice”), Tamil கவளம் (kavaḷam, “mouthful”), Kannada ಕಬಳ (kabaḷa)). Cognate with Hindi कौर (kaur), Sindhi ڪورو (koro, “piece of fish”), and Sinhalese කවලය (kawalaya).
