From นคร (ná-kɔɔn, city) +‎ ปฐม (bpà-tǒm, referring to the Pathom stupa); literally "city of Pathom"; after the ancient Pathom stupa in the city; coined by Rama VI (reigned 1910–1925); previously known as นครชัยศรี.[1]
