From แบงก์ (bɛ́ng, bank, slang for banknote) + กาโม่ (gaa-môo), from Japanese (gamou), after Gamou Jōji (蒲生譲二), the main character in the 1970s Japanese superhero series Spectreman, known in Thai as กาโม่ มนุษย์กายสิทธิ์ (gaa-môo má-nút-gaai-yá-sìt, literally Magical Man Gamou), from which play money notes were distributed as souvenir.[1]
