Borrowed from Pontic Greek αυλαία (avlaía). The form ავლი (avli) is from Pontic Greek αυλή (avlí).

Usage notes
- Plural forms are regular ავლა --> ავლაფე (avla --> avlape), and ავლი --> აველეფე (avli --> avelepe). But for the plural of ავლა (avla), ავლეფე (avlepe) is also used.
- In Turkish-speaking Laz, the term "avlu" is used as the equivalent of the Laz word ავლა/ავლი (avla/avli). It is not generally used in the standard Turkish sense of "an open space in the center of a building".
