Ancient Macedonian
Etymology
Unknown. Apparently equivalent to Ancient Greek ῥυμοί (rhumoí), according to Hesychius of Alexandria.
Witczak (1995) conciders it a cognate of Ancient Greek ὄζος (ózos, “branch”), with -δδ- used to respresent (the reflex of) *-zd-. [1] If this comparison is correct, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ósdos.
Noun
ἄδδαι (áddai) (plural)
- (hapax) poles
Usage notes
- Only attested as a hapax in Hesychius:
5th century CE,
Hesychius Alexandreus,
Συναγωγὴ Πασῶν Λέξεων κατὰ Στοιχεῖον Α:
- ἄδδαι· ῥυμοί, ὑπὸ Μακεδόνων
- áddai; rhumoí, hupò Makedónōn
- addai: poles, among the Macedonians
