Etymology
Derived from 師 / 师 (shī).
Letter
ㄭ
- An additional letter of the Zhuyin alphabet.
Phoneme
- (general) Sound IPA(key): /ʐ̩/ (Pinyin: i).
Usage notes
The letter is used for analytical purposes only; it is usually omitted in the usual transcription. For example, the transcription for 日 (rì) is usually written as ㄖˋ (and not as ㄖㄭˋ), but if any ambiguity occurs (especially when written separately from characters), it might be included; e.g. one may for the pronunciation of 失物 (shīwù) write ㄕㄭㄨˋ to denote this is the pronunciation of two characters instead of ㄕㄨˋ, since this can be misread as one character (e. g. 术 (shù)), which is also a common pronunciation. Overall, this character is rarely used and cannot be typed on most keyboards.
If the character is preceded by ㄖ, which is also pronounced IPA(key): /ʐ/, no gemination additionally occurs.
