Etymology

The "辱" in setsujoku means "to be humiliated" and the "雪" means "to pour snow," "to rinse," or "to wash away."

From there, it came to mean washing away shame, and the phrase "to take revenge" or "to achieve revenge" came to mean washing away shame by beating an opponent you lost to last time.[1]
