Korean
- 까배다 (kkabaeda) (southwestern Gyeongsang)
Etymology
Seems to be from a non-leniting cognate of the Middle Korean hapax ᄀᆞᄫᅡ다 (Yale: koWa-ta, “(transitive) to wake”), presumably from ᄀᆞᆸ다〮 (Yale: kòp-tá, “(intransitive) to wake”).
In most dialects, the first syllable was fully contaminated by Standard Central Korean 깨다 (kkaeda), 깨우다 (kkae'uda); in southwestern Jinju and its environs, the presumed original vowel has survived.
Pronunciation
Verb
깨배다 • (kkaebaeda) (infinitive 깨배 or 깨배어, sequential 깨배니)
- (Gyeongsang, transitive) to wake (someone) up
- Synonym: (Standard Korean) 깨우다 (kkae'uda)
- 자는 사람 깨배다 ― janeun saram kkaebaeda ― to wake up a sleeping person
