Etymology

First attested in the Bullyu dugongbu si eonhae (分類杜工部詩諺解 / 분류두공부시언해), 1481, as Middle Korean 미나리〮 (Yale: mìnàlí), if only Hangul attestations are considered. If Sinographic forms are taken into account, first attested as 水乃立 in the 1236 Hyangyak gugeupbang (鄕藥救急方 / 향약구급방), where the first character is logogramic and the two later characters are phonogramic.

The word is from Middle Korean cranberry morpheme (Yale: mi) + 나리 (Yale: nali, “lily”). The first element means "water" per the Hyangyak gugeupbang, thus it is often connected to Japanese (mi-, water, prefix).
