From Middle Korean 브ᅀᅥᆸ (Yale: pùzèp), 브ᅀᅥᆨ (Yale: pùzèk), from 블〮 (Yale: púl, “fire”) + 섭 (Yale: sep, “side”).[1]
First attested in the Hunminjeong'eum haerye (訓民正音解例 / 훈민정음해례), 1446, as Middle Korean 브ᅀᅥᆸ (Yale: pùzèp). Compare Jeju 부섭 (buseop, “furnace”) and Gyeongsang Korean 부섴 (buseok, “furnace; kitchen”).
