From Early Mandarin 觱篥 (bìlì, “reed wind instrument”). Doublet of 필률(觱篥) (pillyul, “reed wind instrument”), the standard Sino-Korean form.
Displaced earlier 뎧 (Yale: tyèh), itself a nativisation of 笛 (MC dek, “flute”).
