First attested in the Bullyu dugongbu si eonhae (分類杜工部詩諺解 / 분류두공부시언해), 1481, as Middle Korean 피〮리 (Yale: phílì).

From Early Mandarin 觱篥 (bìlì, reed wind instrument). Doublet of 필률(觱篥) (pillyul, reed wind instrument), the standard Sino-Korean form.

Displaced earlier (Yale: tyèh), itself a nativisation of (MC dek, “flute”).
