First attested as Old Korean 天叱月乙 (*hanol-s-tol) in the Hyang'yak gugeupbang (鄕藥救急方 / 향약구급방), 1237. Also attested as Old Korean 天原乙 (*hanol-thol) in the same source.
In the Hangeul script, first attested as Middle Korean 하ᄂᆞᆳᄃᆞ래 (hanolstolay) in the Gugeup ganibang eonhae (救急簡易方諺解 / 구급간이방언해), 1:22b, 1489, equivalent to modern 하늘 (haneul, “sky”) + -ㅅ- (-s-, compound joining element) + 다래 (darae, “hardy kiwi”).
