According to Jaan Puhvel, possibly related to Ancient Greek ΟαΏ‘ΜΟΟ (phΕ«ΜrΕ, βto mixβ), because mud is a mixture of clay and water, thus both reflecting pseudo-PIE *bΚ°ur-u-t-.
