Old Armenian
Etymology
From -այ (-ay) + -ք (-kʻ). The element -այ (-ay) has different origins: in Iranian borrowings it preserves the stem-vowel -a, e.g. իշխանայք (išxanaykʻ), աշխարհայք (ašxarhaykʻ); in Classical Syriac borrowings it reflects the Classical Syriac ܐ- (-ā) (status emphaticus), e.g. խանութայք (xanutʻaykʻ), հռիտորայք (hṙitoraykʻ), պրակսաւաթայք (praksawatʻaykʻ). Probably influenced by the ending of կանայք (kanaykʻ).
