First attested as poptesuuolde in 1206-1215. Originally a compound of Old Dutch Popt (a personal name) and walt (“marsh forest, swamp forest”). The first element was changed to Middle Dutch abbet (“abbot”) after Egmond Abbey was granted land near the hamlet.
