Dutch

Etymology

First attested as de apeltre in 1139. Likely a compound of Old Dutch apel (apple) and *tere (tree). Proposed derivations from Proto-Germanic *apuldra- (apple tree) or Old Dutch apuldra (apple tree) are phonologically problematic. The element *tere appears to have been reinterpreted as heem (home, settlement) at some point. Compare Apeldoorn, Aperloo, Ter Apel, Apuldram, Apeldorn and Appeldorn. See also Elsteren.
