Etymology

First attested as elsler in 1251. The oldest attestation suggests a compound derived from els (alder, Alnus) and laar (intensively cultivated forest). It is possible, however, that the oldest attestation is a scribal error, and that the toponym thus derives from a compound of els and Old Dutch *tere (tree). Compare Appeltern and the German hydronym Elster.
