Sindarin

Etymology

Only attested in Tolkien’s earlier conception of the language (‘Noldorin’). Modified from still earlier gag in ‘Gnomish’. Diegetically explained as inherited from Primitive Elvish *ankā, and so cognate to Quenya anca.

Noun

anc • z[E (plural ainc or enc)

  1. jaw, row of teeth

Usage notes

The intended plural form for words ending in -anc in Tolkien’s mature conception of Sindarin is unclear; the regular formation would be -ainc, but in the earlier ‘Noldorin’ it was -enc.
