Sindarin

Etymology

This word is not attested as such in Tolkien’s writings on Sindarin, but is fan-created ‘Neo-Sindarin’ based on the word nig(la) found in Tolkien’s earlier conception of the language (‘Gnomish’). Diegetically Tolkien explained the original word as derived from a verb nig(la)- (‘to thieve’), while the Neo-Sindarin word is instead reformulated on the basis of a root *nik- (‘to be small’).

Noun

nigol • 5x%j^ (plural nigyl)

  1. (Neo-Sindarin) mouse
