English
Etymology
Borrowed from Dutch Beesel.
Proper noun
Beesel

Dutch
Etymology
First attested as Bisela in 1173. Potentially a compound of bies (“bulrush, Scirpus”) and lo (“open place in a forest”). Proposed derivations from Middle Dutch bise (“hind”) or bise (“black”), bize are incorrect; all three terms are loans from Middle French, and Beesel was located outside of the sphere of influence of the Romance languages. Compare Beesd, Bisselt and Lage Bijssel.
