Etymology

Borrowed from Dutch Beesel.

Proper noun

Beesel

  1. A municipality of Limburg, Netherlands.

Dutch

Etymology

First attested as Bisela in 1173. Potentially a compound of bies (bulrush, Scirpus) and lo (open place in a forest). Proposed derivations from Middle Dutch bise (hind) or bise (black), bize are incorrect; all three terms are loans from Middle French, and Beesel was located outside of the sphere of influence of the Romance languages. Compare Beesd, Bisselt and Lage Bijssel.
