Potentially attested as curtim aput haren in 1170-1180, attested with certainty as apud haram in 1180 and 1182. Compound of borg (“castle”) and the dative plural form of haar (“sandy ridge”). The element borg began to be added since the 16th century to distinguish the settlement from similarly named villages. Formerly an independent village.
