Etymology

First attested as kirkastele in 1179. Etymology unclear. Potentially derived from Dutch *caster (type of tree). Hypothesised derivations from a compound of Latin castra (military camp, fortified post) and lo (light forest), Middle Dutch caste (granary, warehouse) or Old Dutch aster (maple, Acer sp.) and lo (light forest) all run into difficulties when compared to the oldest attestation. Compare Castelré, Castenray, Castert and Kasteren.
