Etymology
First attested as drihle in 1196. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps derived from Old Dutch *drila (“three-forked junction”), in this case referring to an intersection of three rivers. A derivation from a compound of drie (“three”) and lo (“light forest on sandy soil”) has also been proposed. Compare Hoenzadriel, Kerkdriel and Velddriel.
