Dutch

Etymology

First attested as dresem in 1486-1487. Borrowed from West Frisian Driezum, potentially derived from a compound of Old Frisian Dries (a personal name) and hēm (home, settlement). This etymology, however, would make the toponym highly anomalous: Christian names were introduced to Frisia in a time when the hēm element was no longer productive in toponyms. Compare Hanssum and Janum.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈdri.sʏm/
  • Hyphenation: Drie‧sum
