Etymology

First attested as nemus quod vulgo dicitur li Graite in 1250. Compound of graat (hill ridge, elevated place) and heide (heath, heathland). The use of Latin nemus (forest, wood) in the oldest attestation suggests that the area around the hamlet used to be a woodland before gradually degenerating into heathland.
