Etymology

First attested as grevenbiecht in 1437-1466. Compound of graaf (earl) and a second element that has variously been interpreted as Old Dutch *bihegan (surrounded by a hedge) (see haag) or *bicht (turn, corner) (compare bocht). The element graaf was added to distinguish the settlement from the older Obbicht. Compare Buchten.
