Swedish
Etymology
Borrowed from Danish Haffredall, originally derived from Old Danish Hawærydh. The original being a compound of have (“pasture”) + ryd (“clearing”).[1]
Then shortened via the parish dialect to "Haverd", plus the added plural suffix -a (For unkown reason many place-names are in plural form, despite often referring to a single feature.[2]).[1]
"Haverda" was then, via folk etymology, transformed to its contemporary form "Haverdal"; where dal means "dale" or "valley".[1]
The original form Hawærydh is first attested in 1466.[1] The dal (“dale”) form is attested since 1603 as Haffredall.[1]
