Dutch
Etymology
First attested as sconedorpe in 1237. Potentially a compound of Middle Dutch cudele (“sack-shaped fishing net, bottom of a fish basket, basket used to catch birds”) and stert (“long narrow strip of land”). The name was considered odd in the Middle Ages and the Count of Holland unsuccessfully tried to rename it to a compound of scoen (“clean”) and dorp (“village, settlement”).
Compare for the current toponym De Asterd, De Staart and Halsteren and for the failed "upgrade" of the name Bonrepas, Kockengen, Koekange, Schoonebeek, Schoonoord and Wijngaarden.
