Etymology

First attested as liunuuero and liunuert in 1038-1057. Compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian ward (artificial mound used for habitation). The first element has been variously interpreted as a personal name, a derivation from Proto-Germanic *hleunjô- (lee, refuge) and a term cognate to Gothic *𐌷𐌻𐌰𐌹𐌽𐍃 (*hlains, hill). Compare Liezele and Lünern.
