First attested as mugghenbete around 1313. Compound of the plural form of mug (mosquito, Culex pipiens) and an unclear second element. The second element has been interpreted as a Frisianised variant of beek (brook, stream) or Middle Dutch bete (stream used for tanning leather), but neither of these interpretations match the oldest attestations.
