The first element has been variously read as Old Dutch noda (low-lying swampland), Middle Dutch not (use, profit) and Middle Dutch noot (cattle). The second element has been interpreted as a term cognate to Old English selet (willow forest) or a term derived from Proto-Germanic *sali (domicile, home).
