Indonesian
Etymology
From earlier Pasir, renamed to reflect its pronunciation (see also pronunciation spelling). This spelling was first used by the regency of Penajam North Paser (Law No. 7 of 2002), and followed by Paser five years later (Government Regulation No. 49 of 2007). The name change has been followed by Tanah Grogot (or Tana Paser) in 2013, and the district of Paser Belengkong in 2015.
One folk etymology claims that this was taken from the purported Paser words pa "bright" and ser "spirit". However, this theory is unlikely, and better considered from pasir (“sand”) based on pre-2007 name, which reflects its coastal geography. Cognate with Pasig (“a city in the Philippines”).
