Etymology

First attested as Pepinsbruck in 1803-1820. Allegedly derived from a compound of Latin Pepinus (a personal name) and brug (bridge). According to local tradition, Pepin of Herstal (ca. 635-714) got bogged down along with his baggage train in a stream near the hamlet. After he was relieved by the citizens of Echt, he allegedly ordered the construction of a bridge at the site of the hamlet.
