Much like Karelian Petroskoi, from Russian петровской (petrovskoj), based on Early Modern Russian Петро́вской заво́д (Petróvskoj zavód), one of the local names for the ironmaking factory founded by Peter the Great in the area in 1703, after which the current name of the town in Russian, Петрозаво́дск (Petrozavódsk), is designated.
