From Proto-Indo-European *yéh₃sti ~ *ih₃sénti, akin to Ancient Greek ζώννυμι (zṓnnumi, to gird) (nu-present), probably dial. ζούσθω (zoústhō) (dʰe-present).

Modern descendants have reanalyzed the conjugation to je-present with ā-preterite. Athematic inflection is attested in Old Lithuanian.[1]
