Most probably a borrowing through Proto-Norse (*kwerku), from Proto-Germanic *kwerkō. The word has been also compared with Mordvinic counterparts (Erzya кирьга (kiŕga), Moksha корга (korga)), which are however more likely derive from Proto-Slavic *kъrkъ.
