Likely from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ewi-dʰh₁-yo-, equivalent to *awiz + *-dją, a suffix used with herds. Compare *kudją (“herd”), which might have originally meant ("cow herd"). Cognate with Lithuanian avìdė (“sheepfold”).
