From Proto-Balto-Slavic *ker-m-, *ker-w-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to cut”). Doublet of *skora (“skin”) and *kora (“bark”).
Cognate with Old Prussian kērmens (“body”) and Sanskrit चर्मन् (cárman, “skin, hide”).
