Intensive causative of *želti (to cause pain) +‎ *-iti, with narrowing and elongation of the root vowel. Cognate with dialectal Lithuanian gėlioti (to sting).

For the dialectal Russian reflex, Vasmer presumes influence from synonymous *žędliti, whence standard Russian жа́лить (žálitʹ).
