Etymology
From *deběti (“to pray upon in stealth”) + *-nǫti. Akin to dial. Serbo-Croatian дѐпсти (“to await for ambush”) and possibly dial. Russian дёб (djob, “edge, end”).
Probably from Proto-Indo-European *dʰebʰ- (“to deceive, to humble”), presumably cognate with Sanskrit दभ्नोति (dabhnoti, “to damage”).
