This Proto-Slavic entry contains reconstructed terms and roots. As such, the term(s) in this entry are not directly attested, but are hypothesized to have existed based on comparative evidence.

From *odolěti (“to defeat, to discomfit”) +‎ *-nъ, so called because of its use to vanquish diseases. One can see its motivation in Latin valeriana understood as from valēre (“to be strong (sc. against an ailment)”). Roger Bernard even reports a Slavo-Latinate hybridism Odeljanus.
