From Proto-Balto-Slavic *arwis. Morphologically from *orvò +‎ *-ьnъ. According to Pokorny (supported by Snoj), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *rewh₁- (open space, field), see also English room, Middle Irish róe.

Cognates include Old Prussian arwis (true, definite), Lithuanian arvis (suitable) (or arvas, then displaced by tinka).
