Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *arwis. Morphologically from *orvò + *-ьnъ. According to Pokorny (supported by Snoj), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *rewh₁- (“open space, field”), see also English room, Middle Irish róe.
Cognates include Old Prussian arwis (“true, definite”), Lithuanian arvis (“suitable”) (or arvas, then displaced by tinka).
