From earlier *pęnęgъ, borrowed from either Gothic *𐍀𐌹𐌽𐌽𐌹𐌲𐌲𐍃 (*pinniggs), or i-umlaut inflected late Proto-West Germanic *penning, from earlier *panning, both from Proto-Germanic *panningaz (“coin, penny”).
