From Proto-Indo-European *pleth₂- (flat) + *-sno, cognate with Lithuanian plẽkšnė (bottom, foundation), plesnà (foot), Latvian pleksna (bottom of foot), Old Prussian plasmeno (bottom of foot) (probably all of them derived from Proto-Balto-Slavic *pletsna). Further related to Proto-Slavic *pleťe (shoulder, scapula)

Alternative form with -ju- vocalism is probably from related root *pleh₂(w)-, akin to Latin plautus (flat-footed).
