From an earlier *puzro, formed as *puzъ (“belly”) + *-ro. -d- is epenthetic. The term is commonly related to Proto-Slavic *puxъ (“blister”), which indicates an (indirect) origin from Proto-Indo-European *pews- (“to swell”). Compare also PIE *puH-.
The original meaning probably was swelling, blister → gut similar to Proto-Germanic *būkaz (“belly”) from pre-Germanic *bʰew- (“to blow, to swell”).
