Further akin with Ancient Greek σκᾰ́φος (skắphos, hull of a ship), σκάφη (skáphē, bowl, tube), Latin scobis (wood chip), Proto-Germanic *skabaną (to shave, scrape). Compare also Latin scabō (to scrub).

Possibly of the same origin as Proto-Slavic *skobà (shackle, clasp).
